Report – Does your donation count or cost? Understanding donating and dumping behaviours and their impacts for Queensland charities.

March 2016 – This report provides an insight for the first time into public attitudes and beliefs of donation behaviours, its nature, scale and impact of the ‘dumping’ problem in Queensland. It also explores current strategies used to deter illegal dumping.

The report was prepared by UnitingCare Community and undertaken in partnership with the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection, National Association of Charitable Recycling Organisations, and the Brisbane City Council. The research was governed by members of the partnership, who invested significant time and resources to provide advice on the design of the study, data collection, findings and recommendations.

The report found approximately 8,200 tonnes of rubbish has been dumped at Queensland charities between 2014 and 2015.

Victorian Landfill Levy Relief Program 3

Illegal dumping is a persistent problem across Australia, imposing significant costs on those affected. In recent years, charitable organisations have experienced increasing waste management costs as the result of illegal dumping at charitable recycling sites across the state.

The Victorian Government is providing financial relief, via the National Association of Charitable Recycling Organisations (NACRO), to charities impacted by illegal dumping, to both reduce dumping and assist charities with waste management costs.

The Victorian government approved a landfill levy relief program–3. It is available to legitimate Victorian Charitable Recyclers and will run from 1st July 2015 until 30th June 2018.

Graphic and disturbing video of pilfering from charity Op Shops

This video from 2013 captures the extent of pilfering is endured by charity op shops. Charities are left with the rubbish: soiled and damaged clothing and goods no-one wants, certainly not items suitable for sale. It is the sole-destroying sight staff and volunteers at Op Shops see when they come to work of a Monday morning!
NACRO, with the agreement of Salvos Stores, has uploaded the video to YouTube and twittered the link to make the public aware of the importance of making their donation count by donating direct to op shops during business hours or by arranging for the charity to collect the goods.
